Beating Odds All the Way

Submitted by bosconrd on May 08, 2018 Vinod Kumar.B, hails from Banni Mantapa, Mysore. He lost both his parents at a very young age. Ever since the demise of his parents, he was raised by Munirathna, his maternal grandmother who is a vegetable vendor at K.R. Market, Bangalore. Formerly Vinod used to stay with his granny on one of the pavements at K.R.Market. Although there was no one else except his grandmother, he pursued his studies with passion and determination. When he was studying his 9th standard in December 2016, Vinod Kumar came across BOSCO Nilaya (One of the centers of BOSCO Bangalore, an NGO working with the children in need of care and protection in the city). He began frequenting the center to attend the free remedial education classes conducted in the evening. After a month when he shared his plight, Fr. Regi Jacob, Director, BOSCO Nilaya who agreed to help him with academic expenses and accommodation. Thus, Vinod became an inmate at BOSCO Nilaya. He completed his SSLC at BBMP High School, Ganganagar, R. T Nagar, with 78.9%. Vinod Kumar aspires to become an IPS officer in the future.
Besides pursuing his education, he helps children attending the remedial education classes at the centre. He is the Leader of Child Rights Club (Nehru Makala Sangha), Jolly Mohalla, Bangalore. He participated in Karnataka state 10th Child Rights Parliament in November, 2017 and was a student representative to evaluate child related issues with State level authorities and dignitaries. He won 2nd Rank at State Level, Siri Kannada Examination in November, 2017. He has won 2nd Place, State Level, Hindi Secondary Examination. He is selected to Quiz competition at Hyderabad organized by ISRO on World Science day. The competition dates are yet to be announced. He won 2nd Place in Mathematics activities organized at Tata Institute, Bangalore on National Mathematics Day December 22, 2017. He won 1st Place, Qualifier level in Essay writing Competition organized by LIC in 2017.
