BOSCO Yuvakendra is a registered an open shelter under the JJ ACT. It is supported under the open shelter scheme of the ICPS department of the Government of Karnataka. Open shelter provides short stay support for homeless children and children away from their homes. Many facilities are provided to them such as: food, counseling, medicine, shelter, home placement, education and skill training placement etc Unaccompanied children found on the streets and at other difficult and dangerous situations are given support to build their lives back to the mainstream of the society.
BOSCO through the Juvenile Advocacy activities has been assisting the police in handling child-related cases. BOSCO handles two divisions in Bengaluru – the South and West, covering 36 police stations. The project’s primary objective is to create a child-friendly approach to dealing with children involved in criminal offences. The BOSCO Juvenile Advocacy wing conducts various public awareness programmes to sensitize officials and people about crimes by children. These programmes include special training for police officials, and counseling sessions for both children charged with criminal offences and their parents. All serious cases are referred to Observation Home for further intervention by the Juvenile Justice Board. The project also networks with various government departments and other NGOs.
